The CCIE (Cisco Certified Internetworking Expert) qualification
is the premier certification in networking technology. Whereas
other vendors reply on a simple written test to judge a candidates
skill Cisco test people in a two day lab that requires you to
configure and troubleshoot a complex Internetwork. The success
rate is 20 percent ! Very few people pass the examination first
time.
Before you can even attempt the lab examination you have to
pass a 2 hour CBT (Prometric) exam that covers every major LAN
and WAN protocol to a bits and bytes level. This requires study
of a wide range of standard texts. Prior to1998 it involved collecting
a whole load of books on each topic. However Cisco have now started
to publish their own networking books to help candidates for
the CCIE examination.
We list here the Cisco press books and the classic standard
networking texts. Everyone will tell you that you need more than
books to get through the CCIE but books for many people help
provide a focal point for self study and revision. There is no
single book that covers all the subjects in enough depth, here
we list the ones most recommended by our CCIE who has been there
and done it. |

CCIE Professional Development: Routing
TCP/IP
Jeff Doyle
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
This highly recommended book from Cisco Press covers in detail
not just the TCP/IP protocol itself but associated routing protocols
like OSPF, IGRP, EIGRP and IS-IS. The book has that necessary
mix of theoretical and practical knowledge - for example showing
network analyser and router debug output which are essential
to understand for troubleshooting networks. Includes CCIE lab
configuration and design exercises. This book consistently gets
excellent ratings from qualified CCIE's and candidates alike
- nuff said.

Cisco Certification: Bridges, Routers and
Switches for CCIE
Bruce Caslow
HIGHLY RECOMMENDED
Another recommendation from our CCIE covers in great detail
the majority of elements of the CCIE lab, use this book to especially
concentrate on the non-IP protocols - IPX, DECnet, AppleTalk,
DLSW+. Covers major WAN protocols ATM, Frame Relay, ISDN and
covers Catalyst switching.

Cisco CCIE Fundamentals: Network Design
Case studies
This text is designed to cover essential material for the
CCIE lab test, the tough two day and one evening practical examination
of the CCIE program. The book details some of the network configurations
and designs that a candidate might be asked to set up.
It is recommended that these exercises are practised in a
lab environment to gain maximum benefit and to increase the chances
of success of the candidate.

Cisco Router Troubleshooting
Peter Rybaczyk
Published March 2000. Useful if you never want to attempt
the CCIE anyway, we recommend it for ISP staff and network administrators
working on fairly large WAN's. On the CCIE lab having spent a
day and half building your lab the instructor breaks it while
you are out and you have 2 hours to fix multiple problems - Good
game, good game.

OSPF Network Design Solutions - Cisco
Press
Not quite the OSPF bible but covers the implementation of
OSPF on Cisco routers better than anything else and if you are
after CCIE then that is more useful. Like most these books it
is heavy to carry and read. Invaluable for network managers planning
to move their networks over to OSPF where time not spent in design
is an expensive mistake.

CCIE Routing and Switching Exam Guide 350-001
Lucent Netcare
In 1999 Lucent Netcare acquired INS and with it the INS CCIE
program for their internal staff including authors of Cisco books
like Jeff Doyle. They claim to spend 35% of their net income
on training - and a lot of that is on Cisco training for their
consultants - so they know a thing or two about getting CCIE's.
This book from Lucent Netcare is a study guide rather than a
text book - it will help provide a structure to your studies,
give you exam preparation questions ready for the written part
of the CCIE qualification - the Prometric test 350-001.

Interconnections : Bridges and Routers
Radia Perlman
Classic networking text
Remains a networking theory classic from Radia Perlman the
Mother of Spanning Tree Algorithm, and still on Cisco's list
of recommended reading. If you think you don't need to go back
to this you probably won't pass.

Internetworking with TCP/IP
Vol.1
Douglas E. Comer
Classic networking text
Now in it's third edition the publishers claim that this is
the best selling TCP/IP book ever and remains a classic. It is
the most thorough and comprehensive work on TCP/IP ever published
and is high on the list of Cisco's recommended reading list -
an essential read for the CCIE candidate. Cisco expect all candidates
to have an extensive knowledge of TCP/IP, they accept a working
knowledge of some of the lesser protocols like Banyan Vines,
but expect expertise in TCP/IP. Eat, drink, sleep this book.

Currently out of print August 2000, well worth trying to
hunt down. Internet Routing
Architectures
Bassam Halabi
The complete and only guide to implementing Policy Based routing
using BGP, the routing protocol of the Internet. Highly recommended
but heavy going at times, essential if you are taking the new
ISP CCIE Certification path - you HAVE to know BGP inside out.
This was the first book to ever be published by Cisco Press,
keep it it may become a collectors item!
Also recommended to any techie who ever sets foot inside an
ISP - you are supposed to know this stuff.

Technologies Handbook
Merilee Ford
Introductory text from Cisco press that covers the theory
of operation of all the major LAN, WAN and routing protocols.
It is not quite detailed enough to be the only book required
for the Prometric test, but is a good starting point as a refresher
- you are going to have to know ALL of those protocols inside
and out. If there is anything new in this for you then you are
a long way from becoming a CCIE, but we recommend it to people
moving from basic Cisco IP configuration into other protocols
and WAN technologies.
Out of print August 2000.
