A long time ago, in a galaxy far, far away ....

So began one of the biggest InterGalactic blockbusters in the history of the movies.

Never was Elstree more alive than for the eighteen weeks of principle filming of Star Wars. Pushing special effects into a new era of "Industrial Light and Magic" no one could have predicted the immense success that the Star Wars trilogy would become.

Star Wars won Academy Awards (Oscars) for Best Sound, Visual Effects, Costume Design and Best Art Direction - it didn't need to win best film, the filmgoers of the world voted it an outstanding success making it one of the highest grossing films of all time.

Adventure, romance and science fiction all woven with a thread of humour Star Wars was written and directed by George Lucas. Starring Mark Hamill(Luke Skywalker), Harrison Ford (Han Solo), Carrie Fisher (Princess Leia Organa) and Alec Guiness (Obi-Wan Kenobi) as the good guys and gal versus the Dark side of Peter Cushing (Grand Moff Wilhuff Tarkin) and Dave Prowse (Darth Vader).

George Lucas and crew returned to Elstree to make Return of the Jedi and The Empire Strikes Back. Empire required a massive silent stage to be built on the back lot at Elstree. Meanwhile in Los Angeles "Industrial Light and Magic", Lucas' special effects corp. was being created in an empty warehouse. ILM re-defined the movie special effects business, and has created much of the magic of the movies since.

Thank you George Lucas.

In 2001 Elstree Film Studios named one of it's newly completed sound stages as "The George Lucas Stage".
